2014 Imola World Supersport Results
The setting couldn’t have been better for Lorenzo Zanetti Sunday during round four of the 2014 World Supersport race at Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola.
The Pata Honda World Supersport racer was competing before a home crowd for both him and Pata, and the weather was perfect.
And under these conditions, the 27-year old took his debut victory in World Supersport. Zanetti finished 2.072 seconds ahead of his teammate Michael van der Mark, and 6.263 seconds ahead of Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres pilot Florian Marino.
Donning a special helmet in tribute to the late, great Ayrton Senna, Zanetti brought his Honda CBR600RR home two seconds ahead of van der Mark, who was forced to fight his way to the front after starting the race from sixth place on the grid.
The reigning World Supersport Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Team India Kawasaki) took the lead on lap two, but was kept under constant pressure for the entire race by Zanetti. But the Turk ZX-6R Ninja pilot had to retire with mechanical issues with four laps to go leaving Zanetti to take the victory.
Pole-position rider Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport) lost any hope of a podium finish after running off track on lap six and again on lap eight. The Frenchman was able to rejoin to finish the race in 15th.
Rounding out the top five were the sole American in 2014 World Supersport, PJ Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto PonyExpres), and Roberto Rolfo (Go Eleven Kawasaki), respectively.
Van der Mark now leads the World Supersport championship with the same points total as Florian Marino. Zanetti is placed third in the series, which heads to Donington following a one-week break.
Speaking of the victory, Zanetti says “It’s been an amazing weekend and it’s fantastic to win at my home race. I don’t have many words, but I want to thank everybody for all their work.
“I thought from Friday that I might be able to win, but I was under a lot of pressure for the race because it was my home race, and the sponsors’ home race! I was able to stay with Kenan [Sofuoglu] but after he pulled in I won the race and I want to dedicate the victory to Andrea Antonelli. This is for him.”
