Zero Motorcycles Recalls the 2013 XU & FX Electric Motorcycles
Zero Motorcycles based out of California has recalled 128 of its 2013 FX (Dual Sport) and XU motorcycles.
Zero says the electric motorcycles possibly have a manufacturing defect with the sealant material in the battery that may allow water to penetrate the battery and contact the cells.
Water penetration into the battery may lead to corrosion of the cells, possibly resulting in a rapid temperature increase and off-gassing of the cells’ electrolyte which may cause a burn to the rider.
Zero says 2013 FX motorcycles manufactured January 28, 2013, through May 21, 2013, and model year 2013 XU motorcycles manufactured January 16, 2013, through May 20, 2013 are the effected models.
Zero will notify owners and dealers will replace the battery modules, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late June 2013. Owners may contact Zero motorcycles at 1-888-786-9376.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.
