2013 AMA Motocross Results from Southwick

Spoiler Alert: 2013 AMA Motocross results from the Moto-X 338 National in Southwick, Mass., listed below

A massive crowd was present Saturday at Massachusetts’ iconic Moto-X 338 circuit as the facility hosted its final AMA Motocross event.

And as always at the demanding track that’s been around for more than three decades, the action was intense. But the man who came out on top after a 1-2 moto finish was Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey.

This was his second consecutive AMA Motocross overall victory, allowing him to gain some points on the current leader in the championship after the sixth round in Southwick, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto.

The reigning Supercross Champion finished 4-1 to take second overall, with Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia taking third overall with a 3-3 finish.

In the first moto, Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart won the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot award ahead of the reigning MX Champion Dungey and Villopoto.

But the Dungey and Villopoto got held up due to a crash at the first corner. Dungey would regained his rhythm and got back into 10th. As for Villopoto, he crossed the line in 30th after the first lap.

Up front, Stewart would extend a lead over BTO Sports KTM’s Andrew Short, but suffered a crash on lap 9 of 20 that put him out of the race. Short would take the lead but not for long; Dungey would charge through the field, and pass Short on lap 15.

The two battled intensely, but Dungey would hold Short off. Barcia would take third, and Villopoto, after passing 26 riders, finished fourth.

In Moto2, things were much different. Dungey and Villopoto got out of the gate in the first and second positions, with Dungey claiming the Motorcycle Supersport Holeshot Award.

But Villopoto was looking for redemption, and quickly passed Dungey for the lead. The two broke away, and Villopoto eventually was a second ahead of Dungey.

But when the two encountered lap traffic, Dungey gained some time, and a battle began. Meanwhile behind, Barcia rode consistently in third place.

Villopoto was able to fend of Dungey to take the win, with Barcia in third.

Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM SX-F 450 Motocross) says: “It’s pretty cool to be the final winner here at Southwick. I grew up watching this place on TV and now I’m racing here.

“To be able to share this with the fans is awesome. The day was awesome. We made some progress and [took] some little steps forward [in the championship]. We could have done a few things better, but Ryan was riding awesome in that second moto. We have to take things from where they’re at and I’m pumped to get the win.”

Villopoto now has nine moto wins, and is the only rider to win a moto in every round this season. Villopoto has 283 points, 12 ahead of Dungey.

Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX-F 450 Motocross) says: “The first moto was tough. I had to waste a lot of energy to catch back up, but we had a great start in the second moto. I was able to ride really good [early on] and get a gap.”

In the 250 Class, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac put forth one of his best outings of the season across each moto to also carry 1-2 moto finishes to his second overall win of the season.

The race began an impressive Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot from GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn, who extended his holeshot streak to three since returning to competition from injury one week ago. New England native Jimmy Decotis challenged Hahn for the lead early in the moto, while his teammate Tomac made quick work of a top-five start. Championship leader Ken Roczen and teammate Marvin Musquin both experienced trouble in the first corner on their Red Bull KTM machines, completing the opening lap in 11th and 24th, respectively, MX SPorts says.

Tomac assumed the lead before the completion of the first lap and never looked back. He opened up a multiple second margin over the field and consistently pulled away throughout. The battle for second eventually turned into a showdown between reigning 250 Class Champion Blake Baggett, aboard his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki bike, and Roczen. The points leader appeared to have an edge in speed on the series’ most recent winner, but a late crash put distance between the duo and allowed Baggett to claim second, with Roczen in third, Eli Tomac, MX Sports says.

Knowing he needed a strong second moto, Roczen narrowly secured the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot over his teammate Musquin, instantly putting both riders up front early. Both Tomac and Baggett found themselves outside the top 10, forcing each rider battle his way through the field, MX Sports says.

Roczen was never challenged for the lead in the second moto and ultimately posted a wire-to-wire performance en route to the win, often maintaining an advantage of over 20 seconds. With Roczen out front, the battle for the overall win was squarely on Tomac’s ability to move toward the front of the field, which he did so impressively throughout the moto, ultimately climbing from 11th to second over the span of 17 laps, MX Sports.

Tomac edged out Roczen by two points to secure the overall, while GEICO Honda’s Zach Osborne completed the overall podium thanks to 5-3 moto finishes. Baggett just missed out on the overall podium in fourth (2-8), after a small crash pushed him to the back of the top 10 in the second moto, MX Sports says.

Eli Tomac (GEICO Honda CRF250R Motocross) says: “Once you start winning motos and overalls that confidence just builds and builds. It was great to get the overall, but a little disappointing at the same time because of that second moto.

“I got a good start in the first moto and thought I had my technique figured out, but I got a little squirrely there [in Moto 2] and got shuffled to the back, so I had to fight. It’s really cool to be the last 250 Class winner here at Southwick. This track has always been one I’ve looked up to and wanted to race at as a little kid.”

Roczen maintains control of the 250 Class standings heading into the second half of the season, with Tomac just seven points behind.

Ken Roczen (Red Bull KTM SX-F 250 Motocross) says: “It was really important to get a good start in the second moto and it feels so good to actually do that and have a clear track where I can charge from the beginning.

“It definitely did well for me and gave me confidence. I still had some left in me in those last few laps. I’m just super happy.”

The third and final round of the Women’s Motocross Triple Crown also took place at Moto-X 338. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Sayaka Kaneshiro carried a 14-point lead into the final race over N-Fab/TiLUBE Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson, MX Sports says.

At the end of two motos, Patterson put herself in position to win the title by posting a 1-1 sweep. Following 7-3 results by Kaneshiro, which included a fall while running second in moto one, Patterson overcame the deficit to win the Triple Crown by a slim two-point margin. Rock River Yamaha’s Mackenzie Tricker (2-2) and Munn Racing KTM’s Sara Pettersson (4-4) joined Patterson on the overall podium in second and third, respectively, MX Sports say.
