For the second time in the 2013 World Supersport Championship, Sam Lowes piloted his Yaknich Motorsport Yamaha YZF-R6 to a win. The win arrived for the 23-year-old points leader at Monza in Italy Sunday following a last-lap pass on three riders.
Joining Lowes on the podium was Intermoto Ponyexpress Kawasaki’s Florian Marino and Pata Honda World Supersport’s Lorenzo Zanetti, respectively.
Lowes got quickly a small margin on the chasing pack to cross the line in 1st place ahead of Marino, Zanetti and Riccardo Russo (Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) after passing all three riders at the chicane after the fourth turn.
Kev Coghlan (DMC-Racing Kawasaki) put up an outstanding battle throughout all 10 laps, and finished fifth.
Reigning Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) lost the front at turn eight during the fourth lap of the race, while he was on the lead. Team mate Fabien Foret didn’t take part to the race after being involved in the multiple crash at turn one that brought to a third red flag – and eventually led to the decision of postponing the Supersport race after World Superbike race 2.
Similar misfortune for “Rookie” Michael van Der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) who – like Foret’s – is currently undergoing medical checks.
2013 Monza World Supersport Results:
1. Sam Lowes (Yakhnich Motorsport) Yamaha YZF R6 18’09.799
This week, Editors Don Williams and Nic de Sena discuss the new Moto Guzzi Stelvio. It has been around eight years since Moto Guzzi updated the Stelvio, and so expectations were quite high when Nic went to the launch in Spain. Don chats with Nic about his experiences with the new Stelvio, and whether this new version is now a credible ADV bike. Â
In the second segment this week, Associate Editor Teejay Adams chats with Ray Hammons. Despite his mature age, a couple years ago Ray realized a long time dream—to learn to ride a motorcycle. To say that he jumped in with both feet is somewhat of an understatement. Ray was fortunate enough to attend the YCRS Champ Street School when he first got his license, and interestingly, he credits the school with saving his life almost immediately. The topic of whether you should cover the brake when riding is actually quite controversial, and if you do it during an MSF course, you will fail. This is patently wrong, and Ray is clearly hoping the right people wake up, and this change is made to rider training across the country. Â
