2013 Donington World SBK Recap

Spoiler Alert: 2013 World Superbike results from Donington listed below

Competition was expected to be fierce in the 2013 World Superbike Championship, and the first four rounds have proven this expectation.

So far three manufacturers have been dominate – Aprilia, BMW and Kawasaki. The opening round at Phillip Island was a sweep for Aprilia Racing Team, with Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty each taking a win. Round two at Aragon was dominated by Chaz Davies aboard the BMW Motorrad GoldBet S1000RR. At the next round in Assen, Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes took the first race, Laverty the second.

And two weeks ago at Monza, BMW’s Marco Melandri took the win before his home crowd, and Laverty his third win of the World SBK Championship at race two.

Throughout, though, one rider has taken the headlines due to his unbelievable Superpole wins – Tom Sykes. And the Brit carried this momentum into Donington Park in the UK. Sykes took the Superpole win with a new track best of 1:27.378, breaking the previous record he set at the circuit last season. This was Sykes fourth Superpole win of 2013 World SBK, and 15th of his career.

But Sykes wasn’t finished. He completely dominated the races Sunday, sweeping the round. Joining Sykes on the race-one podium was Melandri and Guintoli. In race two, Sykes took the win ahead of Guintoli and Laverty.

2013 Race 1 Donington World Superbike Recap

In race one, Sykes rode his Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja with perfect precision. He got to turn one first from the pole, and went on to lead all 23 laps.

Melandri didn’t get a great start, but was able to fight he was back up to the front, eventually passing Guintoli on the 16th lap to take second; Guintoli would finish third.

Pata Honda World Superbike’s Jonathan Rea was fierce aboard his CBR1000RR in the early part of the race, but couldn’t keep up the pace, eventually finishing fourth. Rea finished ahead of Kawasaki Racing’s Loris Baz and Aprilia Racing Team’s Eugene Laverty. The RSV4 pilot ran off the track during lap 7 at “Fogarty Esses,” and continued struggling throughout the race.

BMW’s Davies also struggled to a ninth-place finish.  An early withdraw from the race for Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki)

Following a crash at “Goddards” on lap 3, FIXI Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier was forced to withdrawal. Teammate Jules Cluzel finished ninth ahead of Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma Aprilia). Ayrton Badovini, Carlos Checa and Niccolò Canepa (Team Ducati Alstare) brought their challenge up to the flag to finish 11th , 12th and 13th respectively.

As for the returning Leon Haslam, the Pata Honda World Superbike rider was forced to withdraw due his fitness levels.

2013 Race 2 Donington World Superbike Recap

Following total domination in race one, Sykes again completed the feat in race two before his home audience. The last time a Kawasaki rider was able to secure both race victories dated back to 2000 (Hitoyasu Izutsu, Sugo WSBK).

Sykes began his charge early in the race, eventually finishing 8.035 seconds ahead of Guintoli, with Laverty taking third.

This was Laverty’s first podium finish at Donington, the Irishman holding off a challenge by Melandri. But the Italian ran off the track at Fogarty Essess, though was able to rejoin and finish fifth behind Althea Aprilia’s Davide Giugliano,

BMW’s Davies finishes sixth, ahead of Baz. An intense four-way battle for 7th saw Niccolo Canepa having the better of Cluzel, Fabrizio and Rea.

The Ducati Alstare team had no luck at Donington’s race 2. Checa was forced to withdrawal due to shoulder issues, and Badovini suffered a crash at turn 2 of lap 19. In race one, the Ducati 1199 Panigale riders finished outside the top 10 (Badovini 11th; Checa 12th).

As for hometown hero Camier, his weekend was completed by another low-speed crash at turn 12, with the Englishman able to get back on track for a final 13th place.

With his double, Sykes now has 169 points, four behind leader Guintoli. In third, 20 behind Sykes is Laverty.

The 2013 World Superbike Championship will now break for two weeks before resuming at Portimao for round six of 15.
