2012 MotoGP Championship Video
For the fifth consecutive year, the MotoGP season opener occurred under the floodlights at Losail International Circuit, Qatar.
And considering he won five consecutive races at Qatar heading into the 2012 MotoGP Championship, Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner was the undoubtedly the favorite to win the first race of the new 1000cc era.
But it wasn’t Stoner’s race; the Australian did lead 16 of 22 laps, but couldn’t hold off an attack by his rival, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo.
The 2010 MotoGP Champion Lorenzo, who started from the pole, took the lead off Stoner on lap 19, and went on to take the first win of 2012 MotoGP. Finishing second was the other Repsol Honda rider, Dani Pedrosa, who passed his teammate on the final laps.
Stoner ended the day in third, and following the race the reigning MotoGP Champion complained of arm pump.
Completing the top five were two satellite Yamaha’s – the Monster Tech 3 riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso, respectively.
As for the other fan favorite, Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi, the nine-time World Champion finished the race in 10th. And the top Claiming Rules Team (CRT) finisher was the American Colin Edwards aboard the NGM Forward Racing Suter; Edwards finished 12th.
