When James Stewart won the Oakland round of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship in O.com Stadium Saturday evening, it was more than just his first win of the season.
The SX victory was dedicated to a special friend in Stewart’s life – Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha’s team mechanic Mark “Tex” Adams. Stewart’s mechanic passed away last week after being struck by a car in Florida; Adams was helping a stranded motorists during the incident.
James Stewart (JGRMX Yamaha YZ450F Supercross) says: “This victory is for the race team and everyone sticking with us. Tex, we love you and you will never be forgotten.”
Stewart’s win came in dominant fashion, the Floridian crossing the finish line over two seconds ahead of Two-Two Motorsports Honda’s Chad Reed. Taking the final podium position was the reigning AMA Supercross Champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto.
James Stewart says: “Tonight I got up front and kind of stayed out of trouble. I felt Ryan there and just tried not to over-ride the track. I was able to get on the inside of Chad going across the start. It worked out. I was not really riding too hard, just trying to make sure I hit the marks good.
“I knew it was a track you just kind of had to be patient on. But I think we had the setup a little bit better for me tonight. Those three crashes the first three races tore me up. But tonight in the Main Event I just pulled it together. So, it was awesome. Especially with my mechanic being lost this week it was definitely tough. This was definitely special.”
In four of 17 rounds so far in 2012 Supercross, four different riders were victorious – Stewart (Oakland), Reed (Dodger Stadium), Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey (Phoenix) and Villopoto (Anaheim).
Stewart is now fourth in the overall SX point standings, 12 behind the men who share the lead – Reed and Dungey.
