BMW SBK’s Melandri: Husqvarna Training

2012 World Superbike Prep

The World Superbike Championship not only challenges the overall shape of a rider’s body, but also the mind.

And one way BMW Motorrad’s newest rider, Marco Melandri, stays in shape both physically and mentally is through off-season training aboard two wheels.

But not on the street; the 29-year-old Italian who signed with BMW Motorrad for the 2012 World Superbike Championship stays fit aboard a Husqvarna TC250 motocross bike.

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad World Superbike) says: “It is the best way to train my concentration. In the gym you can chat with other people or think about other things. On a bike, however, you have to remain focused. While the test ban is in place during the winter, riding an off-road bike is the best opportunity to practice this.”

During the off-season, the 2002 250cc MotoGP Champion can not only be found regularly raining aboard the Husqvarna, he also uses the bike for leisure.

Marco Melandri says: “I ride a lot, almost every week. I like riding with friends, mainly just to have fun. We find nice routes, enjoy the views and stop somewhere for lunch. I really enjoy riding the bike. I love it. It is perfect for me – it is easy to ride. I also like the fact that it does not have a kick-starter, but an electric start, as I am quite small.”

Melandri’s first outing on the BMW S1000RR Superbike will be Feb. 21-22 at Phillip Island, Australia, where the first of 14 rounds on the 2012 World Superbike calendar occurs Feb. 26.
