AMA XR1200: Wyman Breaks Heel

2012 AMA Vance & Hines XR1200 Series

It going to take more than a broken right heel to slow KLR Group rider Kyle Wyman in the AMA Pro Vance and Hines XR1200 Series.

Wyman fractured his heel during practice for the first Daytona SportBike race at Road Atlanta last Saturday, but soldiered on through the pain to finish on the podium in the XR1200 race the following day. He didn’t even find out the full extent of his injury until he got home and visited his regular doctor who immediately diagnosed the fracture.

But just as it was in Atlanta, Wyman refuses to miss any time due to the injury.

Kyle Wyman says: “After the crash they took me by ambulance to the medical center at Road Atlanta just to check me out and make sure I didn’t have to make a trip to a local hospital. I promised them I’d get it checked out when I got home and they let me go. I wanted to get out of there as soon as I could because I had XR1200 practice.”

Wyman quickly discovered the pain was at its worst when we walked.

Kyle Wyman says: “They gave me a crutch to use and I took some ibuprofen to help lessen the pain. Turns out it was harder for me to walk than ride the bike, but some pain was still there when I was on the motorcycle. I just had to get past it.

“As far as attrition goes, it was the most memorable race I’ve ever had. I had the bad get-off from the Triumph when I hurt my heel, then hit some oil and went down on the first lap of the XR1200 race. I had to restart from the back of the grid on my spare bike, which was another monkey wrench thrown my way, but by that point I wasn’t going to quit. I’m glad I didn’t.”

Wyman shrugged off his two accidents and rode from last place to third, a remarkable feat considering the circumstances.

Kyle Wyman says: “I couldn’t have been happier to end up on the podium after all I went through. I just didn’t want to give up for my new title sponsor — the KLR Group.

“I also owe a big thanks to SportBike Track Time, Apex Manufacturing and Richard Harris for their understanding of the situation I was in and supporting me with the Triumph. I was disappointed I wasn’t able to continue on in SportBike but they all understood the situation and were way more worried about my injury. That meant the world to me. Those guys are first-class.”

As far as the heel goes, Wyman was told by his doctor and a specialist that there’s not much he can do other than letting in mend on its own.

Kyle Wyman says: “They can’t put it in a cast or anything like that,” Wyman said. “I will have to rearrange my training. I’m not going to be able to run or do my biometrics. All I’ll be able to do is the stationary bicycle. Hopefully, I’ll be able to stay close to 100 percent for the next race. No matter what, I’ll be riding in Sonoma.”

Up next for Wyman is the May 4-6 Great Clips West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
