2012 AMA Supercross Results
Spoiler Alert: 2012 AMA Supercross results from Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis below
Once again, a record-breaking crowd was on hand for a round of the 2012 AMA Supercross, the latest arriving at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis Saturday evening.
And before almost 60,000 fans at the ninth round of the 2012 AMA SX series, Ryan Villopoto took his fifth win of the season. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider of Washington was joined on the podium by Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Brayton, respectively.
But it didn’t look this way from the start of the main event. JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps was first out of the gate, taking Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot. He was followed by Brayton and Villopoto.
Dungey, meanwhile, would get a horrible start, but was in fifth by the time the second corner arrived. As for Millsaps’ teammate, James Stewart, the two-time Supercross Champion crashed on the first lap, pushing him towards the back of the pack.
Villopoto began his typical momentum, and had passed Brayton and Millsaps for the lead by the end of the second lap. The reigning AMA SX Champion began opening up a lead. Brayton was next to pass Millsaps, taking second place.
Behind, Dungey was quickly moving through the field, passing GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham for fourth by the end of the second lap, and Millsaps on the eighth lap for third.
For the next five laps, Dungey began a charge for second, finally getting past Brayton for second on the 13th lap. By this time, Villopoto had nearly a six-point lead. Although Dungey was able to shrink Villopoto’s lead to two seconds, he couldn’t catch the KX450F rider during the 20-lap event. The win would be Villopoto’s fifth this season, and his first in St. Louis.
Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F Supercross) says: “The track was tough tonight. I tried to ride smart and consistent, paying attention to where (Ryan) Dungey was at. I was able to hold on for another win and my first-ever in St. Louis”
As for Dungey, the KTM SX-F 450 rider took his seventh podium this season, including two wins (Phoenix, Atlanta).
Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM SX-F 450 Supercross) says: “It feels really great to finish strong tonight. I wish I could have had a better start but I am very satisfied with my performance tonight and am glad that I can keep my Red Bull/KTM Team in the championship hunt.”
After nine of 17 rounds in the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship, Villopoto has 205 points. Dungey trails by 13 points with 192. Stewart is in third with 152 points.
In the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class, it was the same story for the series so far; GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia was once again the winner, taking his third consecutive race.
Barcia took the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot, his second this season, followed by Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen and GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, respectively.
Feld Moto Sports says while Barcia extended his lead, Bogle stalked Roczen for several laps, and on the last lap while setting up his move, he suffered a crash. As a result, he lost third place to Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Blake Wharton, and fourth place to Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darryn Durham., where they would finish. Bogle was forced to settle for fifth, and Roczen finished a season-best second place.
Justin Barcia (GEICO Honda CRF250R Supercross) says: “It was great to get the holeshot and check out tonight. The dirt here in St. Louis is amazing. I am not changing anything as we head to the next race; if I keep doing this, I should win the championship.”
Tonight’s win for Barcia marked his third consecutive inside the Edward Jones Dome, and he now is the all-time winningest Supercross Lites Class rider in St. Louis.
The 2012 AMA Supercross Championship heads to Daytona next week, where riders will race on a track designed by Ricky Carmichael.
