2012 Moto Guzzi Motorcycle
Moto Guzzi’s V7 Special differs in appearance from the other V7s due to the sophisticated two-tone paint job, but that’s pretty much it, especially when you leave the radical V7 Racer out of the equation.
The V7 Special has the new heavily upgraded air-cooled 744cc Guzzi powerplant of 50 horsepower and 44 ft. lbs. of manly torque. Firing the Special up it awakens with an eager shake quite similar to a Harley-Davidson Sportster.
The deep growl continues up the gear box and the engine behaves in a very smooth manner. It feels great to cruise around Lake Como just topping 3000rpm whenever needed uphill or for an overtake.
I was lucky enough to take fellow moto journalist Nicole “Desmobabe” Karlis for a spin on the back of the V7 Special and her comfort rapport was that of decent padding but not enough leg room. And due to the pannier mount, she couldn’t hold on to the grab rails where she would have liked to. With a pillion aboard I had to use a lot more revs as well to keep up with the group.
The suspension is firm but never so much so that it compromises comfort. I found the V7 Special’s upright riding position and decent padding to be very comfortable indeed. There is slightly too little space for my legs at 6 foot but it never really bothered me.
The four-pot Brembo front brake is powerful and now it only has to stop 393 lbs. rather than the 404 lbs. of previous V7 models. The weight reduction is at the wheels, new engine and fuel tank mainly.
Out of all three V7s offered in 2012 (Stoner, Racer, Special), the V7 Special is the obvious practical model, but only because it was the only V7 fitted with the accessory panniers, which you could add to the V7 Stone as well.
