2012 World Superbike Video
With his clean sweep of both races at Imola Sunday, Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa has entered the World Superbike history books as the rider with the most wins at Imola – five.
With his win, Ducati now has won 13 of 19 races held at Imola since debuting on the World SBK calendar in 2001.
Checa’s victories were earned, though, considering he had to overtake the man who started on the pole at Imola, Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes. But once up front, Checa began showing the dominance of the Ducati 1198, finishing 3.206 seconds ahead of Sykes in race 1, and 1.935 seconds in race 2.
Taking third in both races was BMW Motorrad’s Leon Haslam, with Aprilia Racing’s Max Biaggi taking a pair of fourths.
With his win, Checa now has the World Superbike Championship points lead after two of 14 rounds; the reigning champ has 75 points, four ahead of Biaggi. Sykes is in third with 69 points.
