For the Suzuka 8-Hours, Round 3 of 5 in the 2011 FIM World Endurance Championship, Suzuki
has put together a new team on a Yoshimura-prepped GSX-R1000, featuring former MotoGP, World Superbike and British Superbike rider Yukio Kagayama, Suzuki MotoGP test rider Nobuatsu Aoki and Australian Josh Waters.
And on Thursday, the Yoshimura Suzuki Racing team set the fastest lap in the opening day of free practice sessions for the Suzuka 8-Hours in Japan.
Team riders Kagayama, Waters and Aoki posted a fastest lap of 2:10.336 aboard the GSX-R1000 just before the end of the session. The Yosh-prepped Suzuki team led FCC TSR Honda’s Kosuke Akiyoshi, Shinichi Ito and Ryuichi Kiyonari with a 2:10.352, and Musashi Harc Pro Honda’s Takumi Takahashi, Makoto Tamada and Tadayuki Okada with 2:10.789.
As for Suzuki’s leading team, the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT), the reigning FIM World Endurance champions posted the 13th fastest time; SERT currently leads the championship with 54 points, 2 ahead of the BMW France team.
Suzuki says SERT riders Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Daisaku Sakai are expected to be fighting for higher positions in tomorrow’s qualification.
Suzuki reported that with a bad storm disrupting the afternoon program at Suzuka, the opening free practice session was cancelled. The track remained tricky in the second session, with lap times more thank two seconds down on normal, and the weather remains uncertain for the whole weekend.
