2011 MotoGP News
Due to Marco Simoncelli being present at Monza World Superbike this past weekend, some news organizations began reporting that the Italian was going to race in select WSBK races.
To immediately cease these rumors, the San Carlo Honda Gresini MotoGP team released a statement Thursday, stating that Simoncelli won’t compete in any World Superbike races in 2011, although the team is prepping a CBR1000RR superbike for him to “test” at circuits yet to be decided.
San Carlo Honda Gresini says: “Team San Carlo Honda Gresini would like to make the following statement: Marco Simoncelli, an HRC rider competing in the MotoGP World Championship in Team San Carlo Honda Gresini colours, will not take part in any World Superbike races during the 2011 season.
“Team San Carlo Honda Gresini are preparing a Honda CBR 1000-RR for Marco Simoncelli in order for him to carry out, if he so wishes, test runs at circuits yet to be decided (in accordance with FIM regulations). This statement is being made in order to contradict reports from certain news organisations following the presence of Marco Simoncelli at the Italian round of the World Superbike Championship, which took place at Monza on Sunday, May 8.”
Simoncelli was quick throughout the pre-season MotoGP test sessions, and finished fifth at Qatar. But during the next two MotoGP round (Jerez, Estoril), the sophomore rider crashed out. Simoncelli will be back in action this weekend for the France GP at Le Mans.
