No Max Biaggi at Magny-Cours Superbike

2011 World Superbike

After missing his home World Superbike round in Imola, Italy, last weekend, Max Biaggi hoped to recuperate from a left-foot injury and race the penultimate round at Magny-Cours, France.

But on Wednesday, the Alitalia Aprilia World SBK team reported the 40-year-old Italian will miss this weekend’s round in France; Biaggi continues to struggle with the foot he injured during practice at Nurburgring, the RSV4 rider hitting some debris on the German circuit.

The team reports that the foot fracture to Biaggi’s metatarsus has not completely healed, and was evaluated again in the last few hours. But the results of the examination were no different than those of last Thursday in the Mobile Clinic. In fact, the fracture prevents functionality of the foot which is needed for gear changes, Alitalia Aprilia reports.

Max Biaggi (Alitalia Aprilia RSV4 Superbike) says: “I would have liked to have been at Magny Cours, just as I wanted to race at Imola. The fact that I was at the track on Thursday to try any possible solution confirms that, even if, unfortunately, I had to give in to the medical evidence.

“And the same thing happened for Magny Cours, a round which is just too close to hope for recovery. Unfortunately this injury requires a recovery time which does not reconcile with my desires. Now I’ll do my best to go through the recovery process and to end this season at the Portimao round.”

As the series headed into last weekend’s round at Imola, Biaggi was the only man besides Yamaha’s Marco Melandri that had a chance of stopping Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa. But with Checa’s 3-1 finish at Imola, the Spaniard only needs three points this weekend at Magny-Cours to clinch the 2011 World Superbike title one round early.

Biaggi is hoping to be fully recovered to race at the season finale at Portimao Oct. 16.
