2011 MotoGP
Although the morning session was dry, a light rain plagued the second free practice session for Mugello MotoGP Friday afternoon.
Under slightly wet conditions in FP2 that didn’t warrant rain tires, but was too slippery for fast laps, Andrea Dovizioso posted a fastest time of 1:49.272, which was 0.285 of a second slower than FP1’s fastest rider, San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli.
Following Dovi in the FP2 session that didn’t merit positive results were LCR Honda’s Toni Elias and Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi. The Italian Rossi had issues with his Ducati GP11.1 in FP1 at Mugello, but didn’t improve much at FP2; he was a full second and a half slower than his 13th-place lap time in FP1.
Rizla Suzuki’s Alvaro Bautista and Pramac Racing Ducati’s Randy de Puniet rounded out the top five in FP2.
Many riders refused to participate in the wet FP2 session, including Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa, and the reigning MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo on the Yamaha Factory Racing M1.
The 16-rider MotoGP grid (short Pramac Racing Ducati’s Loris Capirossi) will be back on the Italian Mugello circuit Saturday morning for the third and final free practice session before qualifying.
