The status as reigning MotoGP World Champion gives Jorge Lorenzo the unique opportunity to change his racing number to No. 1 as he defends his MotoGP title in 2011.

Lorenzo confirmed his intention to run the coveted No. 1 on his Yamaha Factory Racing M1 race bike, revealing a clever design incorporating his JL initials.

Jorge Lorenzo opened his campaign to retain the #1 plate at the first official MotoGP test for the 2011 season at Sepang in Malaysia.

The Spanish rider focused his final test session on a series of shorter runs as he continued evaluating the various developments, impressing his team as he maintained a faster pace through the afternoon despite the increased track temperatures.

The reigning GP World Champion finished the final day in third position, just 0.088 seconds off the top of the time sheets as he looks to extend his impressive motorcycle racing career history.

After the Sepang test, Jorge Lorenzo said, "I’m very happy after the three days, it has been one of the best winter tests, normally we have more issues to feel good. The bike feels better but we still need to improve some points. I think the next test will see us take the next step."

As Lorenzo tries to retain the title, this will be the first time a Yamaha MotoGP rider has worn the No. 1 since Wayne Rainey defended his World Championship title in 1993 for the third consecutive time. Although Valentino Rossi had many #1 plate opportunities with Yamaha, he always choose to stay with good old No. 46.
