Cal Crutchlow capitalized on his pole-position start on Sunday, winning Race 1 at Silverstone, Round 10 of the World Superbike Championship, his first victory of the season.
The win came after Yamaha Sterilgarda rider took his fifth pole position of the season. Besides being his first win of the season, which was his first-career WSBK win, the Coventry man also seat a new lap record of 2:05.259 at the revamped circuit.
This pace was no surprise, considering the reigning World Supersport Champion set a fastest lap 2:04.091 during superpole on Saturday, a time that would have started him on the second row during this year’s MotoGP race at Silverstone.
UK World SBK fans also saw two of the countrymen join Crutchlow in the top three, making it an all-Brit podium. Second went to Hanspress Ten Kate Honda rider Jonathan Rea, third to Suzuki Alstare rider Leon Haslam.
Crutchlow and Rea dueled for most of the race, both riders getting a great start on their motorcycles. Rea got out front first, followed by series leader Max Biaggi. But Crutchlow made quick work of the Aprilia RSV4 factory rider, and began a charge towards the then-leader Rea.
By lap 7, Crutchlow passed Rea, but Rea regained the position at Brooklands. On lap 12 of 18, Crutchlow took him again at Copse, never to be challenged again. He began pulling away from Rea, and cruised to victory.
Haslam didn’t get off the line well, going from fifth to seventh by the first turn. But on lap 4 he fought his way to fourth, and then passed Fabrizio for third, where he remained for the entire race. Rounding out the top five were two Italians, Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio and Biaggi.
The only American currently competing in the series, Pedercini Racing Kawasaki rider Roger Lee Hayden, crashed out on the first lap. Echo CRS Honda rider Broc Parkes also crashed during lap 1.
