Harley-Davidson contributes $4.5M to MDA

Harley-Davidson Motor Company and its family of customers, dealers, employees and suppliers have raised $4.5 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in 2009, the company announced on the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. The 2009 contribution brings Harley-Davidson’s cumulative fundraising for MDA since 1980 to more than $73 million.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company Executive Vice President of Product Planning, Jim McCaslin, presented a check on behalf of those who raised funds for MDA. "Each year, tens of thousands of Harley-Davidson dealers, suppliers, riders and employees give of their time, their money and their love to help fulfill the dreams of a brighter future for kids with muscular dystrophy," said McCaslin during the telethon broadcast. "There is something truly special about the bond we’ve developed with the children and families served by MDA."

Harley-Davidson fundraising activities for the Muscular Dystrophy Association included pledge rides, dealer fundraisers, motorcycle raffles, Black and Blue Ball fundraising dinners and commemorative pin sales. Funds raised support life-saving research, comprehensive medical care for children and adults with neuromuscular disease, and MDA summer camps. These efforts have again placed the company among the top corporate donors to MDA this year.

Joining McCaslin on the telethon broadcast were representatives from the Eastern Harley-Davidson Dealers Association, which holds the single largest MDA fundraising event in the country–the annual Ride for Life which in 2009 raised $960,000.

Also participating in the broadcast were representatives from Kutter Harley-Davidson in Janesville, Wisconsin; Intermountain Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City, Idaho; Cycle Connection Harley-Davidson in Joplin, Missouri; and Grand Rapids Harley-Davidson in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which hosted top MDA fundraising events this year.

Harley-Davidson has been a national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 1980.
